Going by the observations from this study, the rate of violence in the workplace is high in the health setting, despite being under-reported and may be significantly associated with diagnosable mental disorders. Therefore, policy makers need to be sensitized to the magnitude of the problem so that appropriate strategies can be formulated and implemented. Authorities should formulate strategies aimed at disclosure so that those involved can be easily identified and helped. | It is also recommended that special attention is given to the mental health of health workers.
Considering the negative impact of an abnormal mental health on their work productivity due its
104
sensitive nature, it might be important to develop a policy guideline that will allow for periodic screening of health workers, especially those working in the high-risk settings. This will enable early detection and treatment of any mental disorder.
The results underscore the importance of more studies. Such studies should utilize the longitudinal design such that the direction of the link of violence and mental disorders as well as with many of the observed associated factors can be determined especially that available literature indicate inconsistent observations in many of the factors explored in this study. In addition, more studies are needed so as to have a local or national template on which policy guidelines for the prevention of workplace violence in the health care setting can be based. This is non-existent for now.
